Within TU, the Technology Futures Institute (TFI) carries out multidisciplinary research spanning innovation in process control, industrial informatics, energy and environment, life sciences and security as well as providing consultancy services to industry. As such, work is conducted with a wide number of academics and commercial partners. The TFI has approximately 35 academic members plus research staff and 64 PhD students. Teesside as a whole has about 1700 employees. Members of the TFI currently participate as partners in four FP7 projects, in virtual environments, nanotechnology and microsystems and ICT for energy management.

HOCHTIEF ViCon is a leading service provider and consultant for virtual construction and Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM is a method to optimize the planning, construction and operation of buildings with the help of 3D computer models and corresponding databases. "Build digitally first" - in line with this idea, HOCHTIEF ViCon advises and supports its clients with 3D computer models which serve to mitigate risks in the early project stages, enhance communication and minimize cost.
